St. John Bosco Church Liluah

History of The Church

St. John Bosco Church, LILUAH was blessed on 8 December 1937 by Archbishop Ferdinand Perier SJ to serve the European and Anglo – Indian Catholics of Liluah Railway Colony. In 1986 Hind Motors, Uttarpara, and Konnagar were added to the Parish. Now the Adivasis from Chotanagpur form the majority.  Area: Liluah, Bally, Belur, Hindmotor, Uttarpara, and Konnagar. Dialect: Hindi, Oraon, Munda, Kharia, Santhali, Tamil, English, Malayalam, Bengali. Mass: 1. Hindi, 2. English

In 1950 the village of JOYPUR was given over to Liluah. A new church was built and blessed on December 8, 1985, to replace the old one. Area: Joypur, Rajchandrapur. Dialect: Bengali. Mass: 1. Bengali 

On August 1994, a new Mass Centre at BHATTANAGAR was inaugurated and a new Chapel was blessed by Archbishop Henry D’Souza to serve the Christian Community of the area. Here the majority of faithful consist of the migrants of Chotanagpur. On 15 August 2001, Holy Family Sisters joined the parish at Bhattanagar in order to further the family apostolate through family visits and education. Area: Bhattangar, Rabindra Sarani, and Chakpara. Dialect: Hindi, Oraon, Munda, Kharia, Santhali, and Bengali. Mass: 1. Hindi  

Another Center by the name CHANDMARI close to Belur Station was started by laying the foundation stone on 8 December 2003. The Church was blessed on 6 February 2005. Area:  Anandonagar, Bally, and Belur. Dialect: Hindi, Oraon, Munda, Kharia, and Santhali. Mass: 1. Hindi

Divine Mercy Church, Chandmari

In the late 2000s, there were around 15 catholic families settled in Chanmari close to Belur railway station. They attended the Sunday holy mass in the house of some catholic families.
In 2003 a small plot of land was purchased by the parish priest, Fr. Antony Vayalil.On 8th December 2003, the foundation stone which was blessed by His Holiness Pope John Paul ll was laid for the Divine Mercy Church.
On 6th February 2005, a beautiful Church came up with the great effort of Fr. Antony Vayalil and through some donations and prayers of the Christian faithful. The Church was blessed by Archbishop Lucas Sircar SDB.
At present, there are 76 catholic families in Chanmari unit with active participation in all liturgical and cultural celebrations.
